SMM – (or Samen Meters Maken”making meters together” in English) is a joint project of four Dutch grid operators, which serves as a basis for the introduction of smart meters in the period 2016-2021.
The aim of the introduction is to install smart electricity and gas meters in 80% of Dutch households, as defined by the Dutch Smart Meter Requirements. For the SMM project, Iskraemeco joined forces with Flonidan, setting up a joint venture called FlonIskra (FlonIskra V.O.F.).
The SMM project started with the announcement of the tender announcement in 2014 and the contract was awarded to Iskraemeco in June 2015.
Project objectives:
- Providing at least 80% of all small-scale households with a smart meter before 1 January 2021;
- Maximizing consumer satisfaction;
- Minimizing the total cost of ownership of the entire smart meter supply chain and the smart metering process;
- Improving performance by implementing measures according to the Fair Meter principles in cooperation with the smart meter supply chain.
The main objective is to specify, develop, test, produce, and deliver smart electricity and gas meters according to SMR5.0. Since Iskraemeco meters need to be interoperable with the smart meters provided by the other selected supplier (who was awarded the remaining 50% of the contract), all development should be conducted in close cooperation between the suppliers and SMM.
Iskraemeco started the development of the AM550 smart meter according to SMR5.0 requirements in 2015. One Iskraemeco’s engineer was constantly on-site during the first 5 months of development, being in close contact with all other parties, making fast support, and quick adjustments possible.
Just two years later, Iskraemeco delivered 463,000 smart meters to SMM, and one year later another 416,000 smart meters. In 2019, a total of 490,000 Iskraemeco smart electricity meters were delivered to SMM, bringing the total number of meters delivered by the end of 2019 to 1,500,000. In 2020, Iskraemeco expects to deliver 280,000 smart electricity meters.
The successful cooperation could be enhanced by the extension of the contract for the years 2021-2024, with the possible supply of 1,000,000 additional smart electricity meters from Iskraemeco. To further support SMM, Iskraemeco is exploring the possibilities of offering RSP services.
At this time, initial discussions and meetings between Iskraemeco and SMM on the development of SMR6, which is to start in 2025, also began.
