About the World Population Day
In 1989, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme advocated for implementation of the world population day. Inspiration for celebration of this day came from the “Five Billion Day”, when the world’s population reached 5 billion on 11th July, 1987.
Growing population and urbanization
As our cities continue to expand at an unprecedented pace, it is crucial to shed light on the challenges and opportunities that arise from this global phenomenon:
- Urbanization drives higher energy demand in urban areas due to increased residential consumption, energy-intensive commercial and industrial activities, and the development of infrastructure. The higher population density in cities leads to more households requiring energy for lighting, heating, cooling, and appliances. Additionally, urban centers house commercial activities and industries that consume significant energy, while the construction and operation of infrastructure contribute to overall energy demand.
- Urbanization places a burden on water resources, which in turn leads to an increase of pollutants in water and the depletion of sources of freshwater. The implementation of modern wastewater treatment systems, as well as the promotion of water recycling and reuse, are both examples of sustainable practices.
- Urban areas are often hotspots for air pollution, primarily due to industrial activities, transportation emissions, and energy consumption. To mitigate this, cities should adopt environmentally friendly policies and procedures, such as encouraging the use of renewable energy sources and enhancing energy efficiency in buildings.
