Germany’s smart metering transformation

Germany is entering a decisive phase in its energy transition. From 2025, smart meter installations will be mandatory, with a full nationwide rollout planned by 2032. This transformation demands flexible electricity tariffs for all customers, strict security and privacy requirements, ambitious renewables and EV targets and active customer engagement.

For utilities, the challenge is immense: annual installations must grow from around 300,000 in 2022 to nearly 2 million to meet national targets. At the same time, the grid must handle more prosumers, EV charging points and variable renewable generationall while engaging customers in new tariff models and energy-saving habits.

To succeed, smart meters in Germany must comply with the country’s strict regulatory and technical standards (MsbG, FNN Basiszähler, BSI security, MID/IEC safety), ensure secure and GDPR-compliant data handling, seamlessly connect to certified smart meter gateways, and deliver reliable performance over a service life of more than 20 years.
