The discussion centred on the benefits of smart metering for Nigerian DisCos, the implementation challenges, anti-tampering functionalities and consumer behaviour. Ihab went on to explain that the most significant advantage of smart metering is data analytics, which enables DisCos to analyse consumption patterns and load curves to predict peaks and blackouts as well as estimate load curves. This allows them to save millions of dollars by reducing peak demand, avoiding peaker plants, and decreasing downtime.
He emphasized that the power and water tariff system, which prevents the DisCos from adopting smart metering, is one of the greatest and most significant obstacles in implementing smart metering. Smart metering plays a key role in enabling DisCos to modify tariffs by using complex tariff structures aimed at reducing subsidies from households with intermediate and high incomes without increasing costs for those with low incomes. A convenient function that is absent from standard prepayment meters.
He described how smart real-time alarms and automated energy balance systems prohibit tampering with smart meters to temper with energy. Ihab kept the discussion fresh by providing multiple use cases from Iskraemeco’s different smart metering projects in Africa, including those in Egypt, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria.
