The Enfield project: Pioneering trustworthy and green AI
The Enfield Project (European Lighthouse to Manifest Trustworthy and Green AI) is an EU-funded initiative designed to advance Europe’s leadership in AI. With 30 consortium partners—including 20 research institutions and 10 industrial leaders—Enfield focuses on four key AI pillars:
- Green AI – AI solutions that minimize environmental impact
- Adaptive AI – AI systems that evolve based on real-world scenarios
- Human-Centric AI – AI designed to enhance human well-being
- Trustworthy AI – Ethical and transparent AI solutions
These technologies are being developed for critical industries such as energy, healthcare, manufacturing, and space.
Driving innovation in energy and green AI
Within Enfield, Iskraemeco is heading efforts to define and implement green AI solutions that optimize energy use while minimizing environmental impact. The workshop provided a crucial platform to explore how AI can improve forecasting, predictive maintenance, and energy storage optimization, paving the way for more efficient and sustainable energy systems.
“We are proud to be actively driving discussions and research that bridge AI advancements with real-world applications in energy,” said Klemen Žbontar, Lead Innovation Engineer and ENFIELD project lead from Iskraemeco. “Our commitment to Green AI aligns with Iskraemeco’s broader vision of delivering intelligent, sustainable solutions that benefit both businesses and society.”
Collaborative efforts and key insights
The workshop featured two keynote presentations, including one from Uroš Salobir, MSc, Strategic Innovation Director at ELES, who provided valuable insights into AI’s role in modernizing energy infrastructure. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Veljko Pejović, Faculty of Computer and Information Science at the University of Ljubljana, gave a technical keynote on sustainable AI at the edge. Additionally, Maks Prokop, Global Legal and Compliance Director and Executive Board Member at Iskraemeco, inaugurated the workshop with a truly inspiring welcome address.
Participants from academia and industry shared research findings and ongoing projects, fostering meaningful collaboration within the AI and energy sectors.
The workshop focused on finding answers to the following questions:
- How to apply AI research to specific industrial use cases?
- What are potential uses for AI in the energy sector?
- How to implement energy efficient AI models?
The outcomes from these discussions will contribute to future research directions and policy considerations within the Enfield project.
